Distress alert beacon for fishermen

Kochi: S. Ramaratnam, Deputy Director (Avionics), Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), has said on Thursday that a technology spin-off by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will soon come to the aid of fishermen in distress.

By merging radio frequency and signal processing technology, a search and rescue beacon was developed at VSSC and its technology transferred to Keltron. It will deliver a few thousands of this on order from the State Fisheries Ministry. In all, the Ministry has ordered 7,000 units for distribution to fishermen. [During accidents, the beacon goes off to water and transmits a distress signal through satellite to the shore-based disaster management team. Its built-in GPS helps locate the accident site], said Mr. Ramaratnam after inaugurating a national conference on Emerging Trends in RF and Signal Processing organised by Federal Institute of Science and Technology (FISAT), Angamaly.
