Southern districts get welcome downpour

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Temperatures over most parts of Kerala fell appreciably on Saturday following overnight rains in many parts of the State.

Bringing welcome relief from the unusually hot weather of the early part of this summer, very heavy rainfall, measuring 18 cm on the gauge, occurred in Thiruvananthapuram during the 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m.

Heavy rainfall was recorded at Kayamkulam (12 cm), Cherthala (8 cm) and Haripad (8 cm) in Alappuzha district and Varkala (7 cm) in Thiruvananthapuram district, according to the Meteorology Centre here.

The evening downpour on Friday was fairly widespread and substantial in the districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha and Kottayam, with many stations recording between 5 cm and 2 cm of rainfall
