KOZHIKODE: The pro CPI (M) Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) in the state would block traffic on National Highway 212 on April 1 demanding a Central ordinance to nullify Karnataka High Court order justifying night traffic ban on NH 212 passing through Bandipur Reserve Forest (BRF).
Talking to newspersons here DFYI state unit Secretary T V Rajesh said his organisation would stop vehicular traffic on the NH 212, till Muthanga from 1700 hrs to 1730 hrs demanding immediate Central intervention on night traffic ban as it badly affected tourism and trade in Kerala and Karnataka.
He said the DYFI suspected the involvement of certain vested interests behind banning traffic on the NH 212 and 67, which was open since the British era. Uninterrupted vehicular movement was being allowed on many similar highways which also passed through reserve forest areas in other parts of the country.
He accused union environment minister Jayaram Ramesh for supporting the Chamarajnagar District Collectors order on May 3, 2009, banning night traffic which allegedly hampered free movement of wildlife along the BRF.
He also blamed Congress MPs representing Wayanad and Kozhikode for adopting a lackadaisical approach on the issue.
They also did not extend proper support to agitations launched by various organisations in the region to get the order revoked, he alleged.
The road block stir would also be held in other affected areas if the Centre fails to take immediate remedial measures on the issue, he added.
The District Collectors order, which was later nullified on the intervention of the state governments however, came into force after the Karnataka High Court order justified the ban.
