THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Minister for Welfare of Scheduled and Backward Communities A.K. Balan has announced a reward of Rs.5,000 to an autorickshaw driver who drove a pregnant woman more than 250 kilometres to hospital.
The driver took the ride through difficult terrain as hospital after hospital refused to treat her. An official inquiry is on into why the government doctors failed to attend to the patient.
The woman, Suseela, from Eettakkanam in Upputhura panchayat of Idukki district, had reached the Nedumkandam hospital for giving birth. As she did not get any service from the hospital, autorickshaw driver Aneesh (Nedumkandam) drove her to three other hospitals. She finally had to be taken to Government Medical College, Kottayam.
