Awareness programme for farmers on good agriculture practices

Thrissur: The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) conducted an awareness programme for farmers here on Friday on good agricultural practices, with an objective of promoting export of farm products.

Addressing the farmers, E. N. Sunder, Technical Director-EUREPGAP, FICCI Quality Forum, New Delhi, pointed out that though India was the second largest producer of fruits and vegetables in the world, its export share in the global market was less than one per cent, way back to small countries like Thailand and Chile.

The developed countries do not have confidence in the quality and safety of Indian fruits and vegetables.

Unhygienic conditions in the farms, poor agricultural practices, high chemical and pesticide residues and micro-biological contamination were the main reasons for the poor export possibilities, Mr. Sunder noted.
