Rs.332-crore plan for PDS proposed

PATHANAMTHITTA: Food and Civil Supplies Minister C. Divakaran has said that the public distribution system (PDS) in the State will be strengthened further. He was inaugurating a Supplyco Supermarket at Ezhamkulam, near Adoor, on Tuesday.

He said that 16,000 ration shops and 3,000 Maveli stores constituted the backbone of the States PDS. The government has submitted a Rs.332-crore project to the Centre for extending the system to more areas in a phased manner.

The Minister said the rise in prices of essential commodities was not a creation of any State; it depended on the fluctuating trends in the production sector. He said the Centre should take steps to contain the price rise. The Minister said the Centre was yet to concede the States demand for an increase in the rice quota for the above poverty line (APL) category. The Centre should step up the States share of ration items, besides giving subsidy on essential commodities
