Venture into new research areas, Kalam tells CIFT

KOCHI: The fisheries sector will play a prominent role as revenue earner and food supplier for the nation as there is a growing demand for food and constraints on the availability of land for agriculture, said the former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, here on Sunday.

Mr. Kalam was speaking on environmental and biodiversity issues at the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT).

Research institutions like CIFT should establish around 200 Provide Urban Amenities in Rural Areas for the development of villages and train fishermen in deep sea fishing, processing and packaging at sea, he said.

Unique courses should be conducted for fishermen on preservation of fresh fish and processing technologies and marketing with venture capital support.

They should also be sent abroad for training in processing and marketing technologies. The government should support the children of fishermen for higher studies like engineering, medical, biotechnology and management through an established mechanism, he suggested
