THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has said the government will take immediate steps to make available drinking water and toilet facilities in all State-run educational institutions.
Inaugurating a new building of the Government Higher Secondary School, Kulathoor, on Thursday, the Chief Minister said instructions had been given to officials concerned to provide drinking water and toilet facilities in all educational institutions on priority basis and to take up other works later.
The Chief Ministers directive comes in the wake of the observation made by a Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Monday over lack of toilet and urinal facilities in government and aided schools.
The Bench comprising Justice Thottathil B. Radhakrishnan and Justice S.S. Satheesachandran had made the observation while hearing a petition filed by the State government to review a verdict directing it to provide basic amenities to all schools.
The Chief Minister said attempts were being made directly and indirectly to destroy the general education sector.
