KOCHI: Three persons were injured, one seriously, when a retired colonel lost control of the car he was driving and ran over the footpath. The accused was heavily drunk when the accident occurred between Thevara Junction and Atlantis at 2.30 p.m. on Sunday, said the police.
D. Chaudhary, 62, of Dakshin Bahala Road, Kolkatta, has been doing voluntary service at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences here. He was returning after attending a defence ex-servicemens meeting at Katari Bagh, Naval Base when the accident occurred.
The police said that he knocked over Mohammed Shah, 50; his wife Nabaida, 42; of Kodungallur and a street vendor from Uttar Pradesh.
Mr. Shah and his wife were along with their daughter Nimisha at the time of the accident. Shah, who has been admitted to the Medical Trust Hospital, continues to be in a critical situation.
The police said that the accused drove on after hitting the victims standing on the footpath and was intercepted at Pallimukku.
A case under Section 308 of the Indian Penal Code for attempted homicide was registered against him.
