THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has started issuing power disconnection notices to all defaulters, irrespective of whether they are government departments, public sector undertakings or power consumers of any other category.
A top official told The Hindu that KSEB officials handling the management of receivables had been given targets to optimise collection of arrears and they were doing their job.
The Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission (KSERC), which monitors the functioning of the power sector in the State and issues directions as per the Electricity Act on all matters including the fixation of tariffs, had been cracking the whip these past few months to persuade the KSEB to get tough with the defaulters.
Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan had intervened on Thursday to restore power connection to the installations of Kerala Water Authority (KWA), which had not paid the power bills even after a concessional settling of huge old arrears through a one-time-settlement (OTS) formula in 2008. It became clear on Friday that many other power consumers in the public sector too were facing power supply disconnection.
