Raid on shops: 68 traders fined

KOLLAM: Officers of the Legal Metrology Department raided meat, fish, vegetable and fruit stalls in the city as part of a to ensure that traders do not cheat customers on weight and price.

Assistant Controller of the department Venu Kumar said that 68 cases, mostly pertaining to manipulation in weighing machines, were registered.

He said that public markets from Polayathodu to Shakthikulangara, the evening fish bazaar near the Benziger Hospital and fruit stalls in the vicinity of the Chinnakada clock tower were raided. Six cases of weighing machine manipulation were detected at the evening fish bazaar alone.

Almost all the mutton stalls at the Polayathodu public market had their weighing machines manipulated. Most of the footpath vegetable vendors were also using manipulated weighing machines. The raids were conducted with support from a police team.
