THALASSERY: The first Circus Academy in the country was inaugurated here on Monday in commemoration of the legendary circus heritage of this town and nearby areas.
The academy was inaugurated by Sports and Youth Affairs Minister M. Vijayakumar at a function at Chirakkuni near here. Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan presided over the function.
Devaswom Minister Kadannappally Ramachandran honoured veteran circus artistes hailing from the area.
Initially, 12 students, including three girls from the State and other parts of the country, will be trained at the academy. The academy is planning to conduct a four-year course. The All India Circus Federation (AICF) will shoulder 30 per cent of the training expenses.
