Police on a drive against road accidents S. Anil Radhakrishnan

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: To bring down the number of road accidents and to enhance road safety, the Kerala Police are planning some major initiatives.

The prime aim is to bring down accidents from 66 for one lakh motor vehicles at present in Kerala to 30 per lakh as in developed countries, official sources said. Another target is to convert the vicinity of all schools into accident-free zones.

Officials feel that by ensuring better road discipline and enforcing rules strictly in the coming days, deaths due to road accidents in the State can be brought down to below 2,000 a year from the present 3,500.

The police plan to convert accident-prone areas in the State into accident-free zones by December this year. For this, they intend to reduce, through better traffic management, at least one death due to road accident in each police station limit this year compared to 2009
